The Benefits of Water

There is a no-gravity affect in water. This alleviates the load on the knees and hips. The American College of Physicians (ACP) updated the protocol for the management of LBP and recommends nondrug as the first-line therapy. The prescription of drugs carries several risks associated with the treatment. Toich (2017) points out that ACP recommends a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or skeletal muscle relaxant if drug therapy is deemed necessary.

However, exercises are strongly recommended and considered more effective and very unlikely to cause harm. Patients are advised to remain physically active. Inactivity adversely affects treatment and recovery. A variety of different types of exercises are recommended.

These include: low-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercise, high intensity aerobic exercise, core stabilization and muscular strength exercises and flexibility programmes. However, the most effective form of exercise as treatment is unknown and more research is required.

Since LBP is a disorder that impacts on activities of daily living (ADL), functional ability and can disrupt body functions and quality of life, patients with LBP are seeking relief that is sustainable and cost effective. According to Mayer, Gatchel and Kishino (1986) chronic lower back pain could be the most expensive benign condition in America.

Kahere and Ginindza (2020) considered the burden of non-specific chronic low back pain among adults in KwaZulu-Natal and found non-specific lower back pain is a leading cause of disability with a significant socioeconomic burden. Despite all these challenges, LBP is regarded as a trivial condition and remains poorly investigated. the findings of Harvard Health Publishing (2019) contend that there is sufficient evidence that exercise therapy forms an essential intervention in a rehabilitation programme that may include: balancing; stretching; strengthening; and aerobic.

The value of hydrotherapy as therapeutic medium needs to considered in the treatment of LBP. The buoyancy of the water enables a greater range of movement and should help to induce relaxation and to relieve pain.
